Cell Theory

Benchmark: SC.6.L.14.2

Investigate and explain the components of the scientific theory of cells (cell theory): all organisms are composed of cells (single-celled or multi-cellular), all cells come from pre-existing cells, and cells are the basic unit of life.

Cell Theory :

  1. Cell - the smallest unit that can perform all life processes, covered by a membrane ad contain DNA and cytoplasm.

  2. 2. Multicellular - organism made up of more than one cell, the cells have specialized functions
  3. 3. Single celled (unicellular)- an organism made up of one cell that performs all life processes within that cell.
  4. 4. Organism - a living thing that can carry our life processes independently

Vocabulary:

  • All cells come from pre-existing cells!

  • Cells are the basic unit of life!

  • All living organisms are made of cells!

HOT Questions

  1. How was cell theory developed?

  2. Why are cells so small?

  3. How did scientists understanding of cells develop?

Essential Question

  1.   How does cell theory help to organize life on earth? The theory explains that all living things are made from cells, cells are the basic unit of structure and function for all living things and cells come from preexisting cells. Some living things are composed of one cell, while others are composed of many cells. This helps with the organization of living things on Earth.
