Geosphere
VOCABULARY
Biosphere - all living things ex: plants and animals
Geosphere - the Earth's surface ex: dirt, rock sand
Hydrosphere - all the liquid water on and surrounding Earth's ex: fog, clouds, rain, lakes, rivers, oceans, streams
Cryosphere - all the frozen water on and surrounding Earth's surface ex: ice caps, iceburgs, permafrost, laciers, snow, hail
Atmosphere - the layers of gasses that surround and protect Earth's surface, where weather happens, provides protection from the sun, maintains the temperature of the Earth, supplies gasses necessary for life (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide)
Essential Question
How does energy move through Earth's systems? Energy enters Earth's system as energy from the sun in the form of heat and light. The heat enters Earth's geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere which keeps the planets temperature within a range essential for organisms to live and grow. The light energy is used by plants and other producers to make food, which is then eaten by other organisms and energy is transferred. When organisms die their matter and energy are recycled back into Earth's systems.
How is Earth like a system? A system is a series of parts that work together and function as a single unit. Earth is like a system because the different spheres have different functions. But they interact with each other and work together as a single unit.
